    Classic Ship Meets The Orient

    GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP:

The ship was originally meant for The Orient but NCL ended up picking up a bunch of ships due to a large order cancellation by another company. I've been on very large ship so it was immediately evident to me when I boarded The Spirit that it was a lot smaller than many other ships. Still, the ship was very clean, well kept and the layout was quite easy to negotiate. Everything was a bit compact compared to many ships so again, the feel of it being smaller was obvious in most areas of the ship. But we enjoyed being on board very much and I wouldn't turn down another opportunity to sail on The Spirit if it came down to it.

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    yes

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

We opted for a very large Penthouse this year. In fact, we had a Penthouse last year on The Dawn but it was quite old and dated. We immediately fell in love with the Penthouse this year on The Spirit. It was incredibly spacious and offered a lot of storage. To both myself and my partner we absolutely LOVED the bathroom area with a huge, wonderful shower that had a floor to ceiling window overlooking the sea. Also, the jacuzzi tub was excellent and we used it several times throughout the week. The bedroom area was amazing, very quiet and the bed was seriously one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in outside of my own home in quite sometime. We loved the large expresso/coffee maker which was well stocked several times a day by our butler. We are so excited about the Penthouse that we booked another one for next year's cruise on The Sun.

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

Again, the public spaces were very well kept and clean but very small. It all worked out fine and frankly the smaller size of the ship made things more classic to me and not so over the top like many of the huge floating cities we've been on previously. I seemed to meet a lot more people on this cruise (outside of our Aquafest group) and I think it was because spaces were smaller and I just ended up naturally meeting people in close proximity.

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

I'll be honest, we felt like the food was not that great throughout the different areas of the ship. We made a comment several times during the week that it was pretty bad that the little greasy spoon (The Blue Lagoon) had better food than the bigger restaurants. We ate at Cagney's Steakhouse which didn't seem to be as good as the times we've eaten at this steakhouse on other ships. Everything seems very processed but the steaks were good. All the sides seemed frozen and pre-prepared. The Windows Dining Room was "ok". Again, we thought the food was not as good as the other ships. And finally, we thought the main buffet was pretty decent and had a variety of things for all type of eaters but overall, still not that great. We do still love the Freestyle arrangements for eating and loved that you can just showup. -- We were in the spa several times and I have to say as a massage therapist. I had a really great deep tissue massage. As with other ships, prices are nuts!

Small ship - and it feels it!

    GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP:

Part of the 2011 Aquarest cruise from New Orleans (550 gay men/women on a ship of 2000). Small staterooms (201 sq. feet for our balcony), and small balconies (cannot sit facing out to sea!). Little space for clothing other that large closets for hanging clothes. Clean. Attentive staff. VERY poor ventilation - if your neighbors smoke, YOU'LL KNOW IT. Smoke wafted into our stateroom several times a day.
Average decor, but easy to navigate. One adult pool and a second, barely-used kiddie pool.

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    no

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

VERY small (201 sq. feet) for our balcony. Small balcony with no room to set facing out to sea. Only one nightstand and no easy chair in the sitting area. Limited space for clothing other than the closet. Very limited drawer space. Single electrical outlet for 110. Hard, but comfortable bed.

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

Clean but unremarkable public spaces. Too much smoke that enters from the outside spaces. Promenade deck is pleasant, but, again, too much smoking.

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

Unremarkable food - quality has deteriorated over the last 10 years - this was my third NCL trip. Nice main dining rooms. Very good meal for Indian food (20 courses!) in Teppanyaki - but only one sitting, one night. Awful pizza - cardboard crust and gelatinous cheese.

    Transatlantic voyage, April 2012

    GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP:

Great value with a wonderful deal. Nice ship, mostly well cared for, but found areas of rust of couch in suite was worn. Wonderful staff. Freestyle was not as bad as I thought it might be. Horrible cruise director, who I wrote up. She spoke bad about me and my group within earshot of me. She would walk by the pool and not smile or say hello to a single person.

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

Very small. Disliked this room. It was sideways, so when opening the door, the bed was immediately to the left. If cabin mate was sleeping, anyone in the hall had a good view of her. Decor was fine and it was a comfortable room. We were on 11th deck mid ship. Could slightly hear chairs moving on deck above us early mornings, but it wasn't too bad. Heard we might hear water from the pool, but we never did.

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

Was not impressed with the public areas. Not enough fun places to hang out. Pub was small, out of the way, echo-y and unattractive. They did accommodate our request to move LGBT happy hours to 5pm, but the bar was loud from the live music and hard to hear conversation. They also often held events in the bar, like trivia games and Wii tournaments. Found rust along windows on port side Lido buffet. 2 pianos in the public areas, never played during the cruise; only once during disembarkation. Odd theater placement where one enters from behind the stage

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

Few to no happy hour specials. Certain drink specials were only available 1-2 days during our 2 week cruise. Food was hit and miss. Some nights dinner was delightful. Others, it was much less than impressive. The buffet was the best I've encountered at sea. Spa was nice, but only 2 recumbent bikes. not much privacy in the dressing room with 2 doors that open where people in the hall can see the changing area. Entertainment was good for the most part. The ship's cast was phenomenal but other acts were mostly mediocre to bad. Both comedians told old jokes from 30 years ago! Hypnotist was entertaining, magician was so bad we walked out.

    Loved it!

Beautiful Ship, easy to get around, great entertainment and amazing staff. Food was good to excellent.

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

Stateroom was small, but well layed out with excellent bathroom. Balcony small, but great for relaxing on.

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

Ship is well designed, very clean, with a good number of private areas.

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

Food was good to excellent, many options in MDRs and many free and additional cost venues. The spa is small, but did provide good service. The entertainment was very good, and far better than. I could have imagined. The club forward of the casino has a great vibe and very good DJ.

    Smoky and Cozy

    GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP:

The smaller size was comfortable and not as intimidating as the larger ships but you can feel the ocean more.
It's an easy ship to navigate and kept fairly clean. Lack of multiple routes means walking through smoky areas more than I care for.

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    yes

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

The room was average size. Exactly what I was expecting. The steward was friendly and attentive to our needs.

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

Our room was down a hall just off the smoky casino so I avoided going there whenever possible.
Overall the staff was GLBT accepting and the ship was well kept.

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

We were not impressed with the Windows dining room. It seemed pretentious with small portions. The same food was available at the buffet. The buffet had a nice selection that rotated throughout the day. So you might not be able to get the same thing twice. My timing was poor to ever catch a burger poolside because that seemed to close at the oddest times.
