    Elegant Oceanliner

    GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP:

We just returned from a transAtlantic crossing. The ship had recently been refurbished and was in good condition. Our cabin, dining areas and bars were always clean. Our room was midship and did 'creek' a bit, but otherwise no complaints. About half of the cruising population on this cruise were British and older in age, however we never had to worry about noisey children!

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    yes

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

We had a balcony cabin on the 11th floor, midship. Great location and close to elevators. Nice designer toiletries. Limited room service menu, however we chose to go to the restaurants.

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

Public areas were always clean and well kept.

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

The dinner menus in the Brittania were okay. We actually like the food better on the Celebrity Cruise Line. The buffet was always available and offered more variety however we enjoyed the formal nights and primarily ate in the dining room. The staff were very polite and always spoke when we passed in the hall. Superb service.

    QM2 Transatlantic August 2012

    GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP:

I sailed the QM2 a year ago and she is starting to show a little wear and tear. The service is excellent. I shipped formal clothing ahead which was expensive, but with 2 weeks travel in Iceland, France and England beforehand, it was worth the $250. for #30. I was a single and my sister and friend had the room next door. They opened the partition between our balconies located on the 4th floor near the bow. The location was great in relation to the entertainment areas and SPA. They have a laundry room on each floor, but ours seemed to be always in use so I used the ships laundry service. If sailing transatlantic we didn't think about which side would be on the north or south until we boarded. If you want the sun be sure to pick the south facing side...it's 7 days!

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    yes

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

The size of the stateroom is fine and Ronaldo kept it very clean and tidy. I used the spa daily so the small but efficient bathroom isn't really an issue. There was a little desk and sofa that felt just like a hotel room [bad art included]. Bed linens and abundant fluffy pillows were a joy to sleep on. My balcony had a waist high open view, but the chairs were low so you couldn't sit down and look out over the ocean. Stools and a bar type table would be more efficient for out there. The TV had news and several movie stations, some in foreign languages and they broadcast the lectures from earlier in the day.

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

Public spaces are kept quite clean and service is excellent. My location on the 4th floor was quiet and very well located for this ship. Internet is questionable for the price and works best in the middle of the night when there's little use I was told.
The 8 year old ship could use a freshening up, but it is quite elegant and extremely stable.
I toured the galley with my gay group. I was very impressed and quite surprised how most everything is made from scratch daily.
There is a funky "disco" in the back of the ship where the gays hang out and dance. {smoking allowed back there too] The DJ is intermixed with a band that can only play approved songs. It was a little cheesy but the wait staff makes up for it with their enthusiasm and friendliness.

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

The food has good points and bad. The meats were done quite well, the sides and desserts are less so. The lectures are always very good but the ships entertainers are hardly worth the time. The SPA, which I used daily, is nice and clean. One sauna was problematic, the lockers locking mechanisms were problematic, but the attendant showed me how a spoon works easily to open them when the battery is dead in the lock. The masseur was very good and I used him daily $143+gratuity.
We dined several times at Todd English where the food and service were the best. One waiter issue was that my ship card was declined and he announced it to the entire table. "Miami" wasn't on my bank card's itinerary since I thought it was a British ship and the billing would be from there. so I had to clear that up at the front desk. He could have been a little more discreet...

    Christmas/New Years Voyage

    GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP:

it's a beautiful ship. If elegant estetics are a key reason you're cruising, the Queen Mary 2 does not disappoint. The public areas are all beautiful and well kept. The large formal ballroom, and planetarium are really the crown jewels that set this ship apart.

WOULD YOU CRUISE THIS SHIP AGAIN:

    yes

    TELL US ABOUT YOUR STATEROOM:

We had an inside cabin on the 11th floor. Average size with ample closet space. Shower was a little small compared to Holland America but definitely bigger than the one we've had on Princess ships. No towel animals--cut backs. Beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. In the darkness of the inside cabin--I can't remember the last time I slept that well!

    HOW WERE THE PUBLIC SPACES:

The areas were lovely. Given that this was a holiday cruise with a Charles Dickens theme, I though the decorations were a bit sparse. Things looked lovely but not in the "over the top" way I expected from a self acclaimed luxury liner.

    TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES:

The dining experiences were a surprising disappointment. Meals and menu choices for the first three nights were sub par. They seemed to gradually get better over the remainder of the cruise, and by the end I would rate the dining room as "good" but nothing above that. Menu selections were limited--several nights did not have a beef option.

The dining room staff worked their tails off, but the room was quite obviously understaffed. Water glasses never got refilled. I finally resorted to calling the wine steward over every time I needed water. That annoyed him since he was also busy, but it was the only way to get a beverage as waiters were nowhere to be found. Same problem if you wanted more bread.

Gym was smaller than on a lot of there ships--surprising given how relatively new the ship still is.

On board singers/dancers were on par with what we've experienced on other ships. We really enjoyed the special entertainers (vocalists, acrobats) that they flew in.
