Ask And You Shall Receive

Survey Results: Part 3
By: Michael Bradbury, MMOB Director of Marketing
The MeetMeOnBoard tagline, “Where gay cruise travelers connect” captures the purpose of the site in just a few words. Through our recent membership survey, you have told us in many more words just how you would like to accomplish that.
One member says, “I feel the present online email system is a good tool.” Another adds, “I prefer to meet or at least send messages prior to sailing.” A future-forward members suggests, “Video chat would be great!”
Mark and Dale started MeetMeOnBoard.com because they were going on a cruise and wanted to know if other gay people would be on board. Of course there were others on board but they didn’t know how to get in touch with them before the ship sailed.
Fast-forward three plus years later and we have an active community of nearly 4,000 LGBT cruise enthusiasts who are connecting before, during and after their cruises. What we couldn’t have anticipated before starting the site is how many different ways there are to connect, virtually.
What is clear is that you want us to keep up with technological advances while maintaining more traditional online communication methods.
We offer The Muster Station as a sandbox for members to use however they are comfortable. It started out as a place for people to announce the ships they were sailing. Now we have a special place in The Forum for that – Roll Calls. Then The Muster Station became the hot place to live blog from ships and to make general inquiries or comments. A few members even thought it would be fun to post their ship photos there.
As a significant number of members begin to use The Muster Station for one specific use, we try to spin that use off into its own feature. By doing this we are responding directly to what you want, whether you ask for it or not. And more of those features are on the way.
In the survey many of you asked for a forum to capture topics in an archive. Since finishing the survey we launched The Forum. It includes ship Roll Calls, which most of you requested from the get go.
Some members asked for a chat function on the site. Now, there is one in the works. In the meantime, you can use The Muster Station as a public (yes, it’s crawled by Google all the time) chat room since everything in there is live and in real time. With enough people using The Forum, it’s got potential to fill that use too. But the best way to communicate instantly is through My Cruisemates on your profile.
As those of you who have booked a cruise since joining MeetMeOnBoard know, when you have an upcoming cruise listed on your profile, you are automatically put into a group with all the members who are on the same cruise.
And for those of you who wanted some private groups on the site, My Cruisemates works perfectly for that, providing you are booked on an upcoming cruise. In the coming months we will be adding more groups to The Muster Station, where some of our site partners and a few others will set up their own places to gather.
About one-third of the membership visits MeetMeOnBoard 2-3 times per month while another 35% visits just a few times a year, likely when they have an upcoming cruise.
While most of you said that MeetMeOnBoard is pretty easy to navigate, 30% of the members suggest we continue to make improvements. We’ve taken those comments seriously and have made a few slight changes already with a few more coming this summer.
But many of the comments related to features that we already have available but perhaps haven’t explained thoroughly.
The number one question members asked was how to find out if other members are booked on their cruise.
As long as you have your cruise listed in your profile other people on the same sailing will automatically show up in My Cruisemates. If you haven’t added your cruise to your profile you can go to the Cruise Calendar and find the cruise there. If it there is a “Meet us on board” link in the listing then you can click there and see all the members who are going with you.
Though MeetMeOnBoard is growing fast, we know we aren’t including the LGBT cruisers who are not yet members. That’s where we rely on you. As you meet folks on ships or on land for that matter, please tell them about MeetMeOnBoard so we can get everyone who wants to on board.
“We have all this cool technology that frankly I don’t understand,” says Mark den Hartog, MMOB founder. “And we just keep adding the latest gizmos and widgets to the site so we can keep the members happy.”
By far the biggest piece of constructive criticism we received was relating to logging in and staying in. Different web browsers respond differently but many members were having a problem signing in and then being asked to sign in again. This issue is completely resolved. But a few folks who haven’t visited the site for a couple of months may need to refresh their cookies or delete their MMOB browser history. Once you do that the sign in problem should melt away. Now once you are signed in, you have to log out. You won’t automatically be logged out after a few hours any more.
On our survey, we asked what features of MeetMeOnBoard are important to you. You responded overwhelmingly and we listened.
Here are the Top Six features you want to see.
- Cruise Reviews from a gay perspective
- Ports of Call from a gay perspective
- Ability to connect with a cabin mate
- Live chat
- LGBT Cruise Forum
- Smartphone Application
We have added The Forum since the survey was conducted and are currently working on four of the other top requested features, including cruise reviews and ports of call which we’ll be rolling out soon after Labor Day.
From all the team at MeetMeOnBoard we are so pleased to continue to serve you by giving you the features you want to optimize use of our site. Please keep coming back and tell your friends and fellow cruise travelers.
MeetMeOnBoard is an online social network but from the survey many of you are already meeting in person. We’ll have a few of those stories and tell you about our plans to help you meet in port cities in our next installment of our 2011 Survey Results, Meet Me Before We Get On Board.
