Tony Awards to broadcast from cruise ship!
This seems like a gay marriage made in Lido Deck heaven: according to a press release from the cruise line, a portion of this Sunday’s Tony Awards will be broadcast from Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas (see ship review here).
“As the only cruise line to feature fully-licensed Broadway productions, Royal Caribbean International will partner with the Tony Awards to include a live broadcast from the middle of the Caribbean Sea, where the line’s Oasis of the Seas’ cast of Hairspray will perform a show-stopping number in the ship’s Opal Theater as part of the Tony Awards program. The cruise line, which has been named an official partner of the 66th Annual Tony Awards, will be part of the live broadcast airing on CBS from the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Sunday, June 10, 2012,” Royal Caribbean’s release explained.
Tune in! And chime in…what’s the best show you’ve ever seen on a cruise ship?

I saw the Tony Awards show, including the clip of HAIRSPRAY from the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas. Was it my imagination or was the role of Edna Turnblad played by a “real woman?” For God’s sake that role was created for Divine and was played by John Travolta and the great Harvey Feirstein.
Why on earth would Royal Caribbean use a female in that role? John Waters, wherever you are stand up and speak!

Frank–I’ve rewatched the Tony Awards on PVR, and I think their Edna is, indeed, a man. It’s hard to tell for sure from the short amount of air time Edna got on the broadcast, though.
